World-class squash set to take centre stage at the Regent

Traditional theatre seats are packed with a crowd enraptured by the action on stage at this year's squash finals in Christchurch.

There's not much Regent on Broadway hasn't hosted over the years, featuring every facet of the performing arts. But next February, it will add something new to the list.

For six days, the iconic Palmerston North theatre will be transformed into a squash arena, with a glass court installed on the stage for the 2027 New Zealand Squash Open. The tournament runs from 15-21 February and will bring New Zealand's top players together with international stars, giving spectators the chance to experience elite squash in a unique sporting environment.

Palmerston North Mayor Grant Smith says the event is an exciting milestone for the city.

"Watching the world's best players compete on a glass court in a venue like the Regent will be something truly special, with sport meeting the arts," says Mayor Smith.

"We're proud to welcome the New Zealand Squash Open to Palmerston North and showcase another side of what our city can offer as a host for major events."

Let's pack the Regent and make history

Earlier this year, more than 1,200 spectators packed the finals of the New Zealand Squash Open in Christchurch (pictured above) – the largest crowd ever to watch a squash match in New Zealand. With seating for over 1,300 people at each session, a sell-out Regent would make history.

"I know we're huge sporting fans in this city and region, and I'm challenging the community to get behind the event," says Mayor Smith. "Let's pack the Regent, create an incredible atmosphere and show the country why Palmerston North is such a great place to host major sporting events."

Palmy has a proud history of hosting major squash tournaments, including the Men's World Team Championship in 1971, the Junior Men's World Championship in 2006 and the Women's World Team Championship in 2010. This event will mark the return of international squash to the city.
