Get to know William

Born in Palmerston North and raised in the wider Manawatū, William is proudly local through and through. After finishing school, he made the city his home and today he’s focused on helping make it an affordable, enjoyable place for everyone who lives here.

For him, that means keeping rates manageable while making sure we look after the things that matter. He’s focused on investing wisely in maintenance and renewals, zoning enough land to support new housing, and building the infrastructure needed for a growing city. He also believes strongly that Council can’t do everything, and that there’s benefit in partnering with the community to create a wide range of interesting events and opportunities that bring people together.

Before being elected, he worked in commercial real estate in the city, giving him a practical understanding of local development and business. Since joining Council, he has also worked part time as a marketing coordinator for a local charity. That role, he says, keeps him grounded and closely connected to the realities many people in the community face day to day.

When asked what he enjoys most about being a councillor, William says it’s the ability to make a difference. While no single vote can change everything, he sees Council as "a bit like steering a ship," and small adjustments over time can help set the right course. Watching those gradual changes add up is what makes the role so rewarding for him.

Outside of Council, William's an everyday kind of guy who enjoys the simple things. You’ll find him reading, writing, heading to the movies, travelling around the country, or spending time with friends, family and his dog, Olive. He’s also a keen board game player and loves a good games night.

A fun fact many people do not know is that he is half Canadian. His dad is from Alberta, and every couple of years he heads back to visit his grandparents, aunty and cousins.

If you are looking for his favourite local spot, try Edwards Pit Park. It's his go-to place for off leash walks with Olive. It's peaceful, spacious, and one of the city’s hidden gems.
