Andrew, Planning Services Team Leader
After nine years planning developments in Scotland, Andrew decided to swap the grey skies for a little more sunshine. A recruitment drive by Auckland Council brought him and his partner to New Zealand. He's spent the next decade working in planning, eventually specialising in urban design and complex resource consent assessments.
Finding a home in Palmy
Andrew and his partner moved to Palmerston North seven years ago for his partner’s job. It didn’t take long for the city to feel like home.
“We’d always dreamed of having a bit of land and some animals, so Palmy was a great fit,” Andrew says.
After six years working remotely for Auckland Council, Andrew joined Palmerston North City Council 18 months ago as planning services team leader.
“It was an opportunity to contribute directly to the community where I live and help shape a city I love.”
Andrew supports our planners as they assess resource consents, helping achieve good development outcomes while considering the needs of people and the environment.
“The most rewarding part of my role is helping achieve good development outcomes that benefit both applicants and the wider community.”
Making the most of Palmy
Outside work, Andrew and his family are regulars at Victoria Esplanade and the river pathways. Weekends often involve a bike ride, walk or playground visit – usually with a good coffee or hot chocolate nearby.
He says one of the biggest surprises about living in Palmerston North has been its sense of community.
“Coming from Auckland’s fast-paced environment, it was refreshing to find a city where people genuinely take time to connect. Everything is so close, but you still have fantastic parks, open spaces and a great environment to raise a family.”
Life at home is busy too. Their lifestyle block is home to two large dogs, three horses, a pony, chickens, sheep, lambs, plenty of wild rabbits and a pond full of noisy frogs. There’s never a shortage of jobs to tackle.
Planning for change
Andrew and the team are preparing for major changes to New Zealand’s planning system, with the Resource Management Act set to be replaced.
“While we’re still waiting on more detail from central government, the reforms are expected to influence how development is enabled and how potential effects are managed.
“Our team is preparing now so we can adapt quickly, minimise disruption and continue providing a high-quality service to our community.”
For Andrew, it’s all part of helping Palmy grow while remaining a great place to live, work and raise a family.
