Come and talk with us about council merger proposals
Published on 24 June 2026
Nearly 500 people have already shared their views on possible council mergers and the future of local government in our region, but there's still time to have your say before feedback closes on 30 June.
We're inviting Palmerston North residents to come along to our upcoming drop-in sessions to share their views and speak directly with Mayor Grant Smith and councillors.
The government has signalled major changes to local government structures, including the removal of regional councils from October 2028, and has asked councils to develop amalgamation proposals.
Mayor Smith says the decisions made could have a lasting impact on communities across the region.
"This is about the future of Palmerston North and the wider region. Any changes could affect rates, how you are represented, community facilities and services, infrastructure investment, and Palmerston North's identity and priorities."
"It's important that we have a strong local voice in this process. The more feedback we receive, the better informed we'll be as we work with neighbouring councils and consider what is best for our city and region."
The feedback we've received so far shows people are taking a thoughtful and balanced approach to the conversation.
"Our community is telling us they are open to the potential advantages that can come with greater scale, but they want that balanced with fair representation and maintaining a strong local voice and identity."
"We're also hearing that people aren't necessarily convinced there will be a cost saving from amalgamation, but they are interested in opportunities to improve efficiency and deliver services more effectively.”
To encourage more people to get involved in the conversation, everyone who attends one of the drop-in sessions will go in the draw to win one of two $100 Prezzy Cards.
Offering an incentive is not something we’d would normally do for community drop-in sessions, but the significance of the issue warrants trying something different.
“These potential changes could shape local government in our region for decades to come. We want as many people as possible to have their say on an issue that could affect future generations."
Residents can drop in at any time during the sessions. No registration is required.
