Those building their own home or business in Palmerston North now have extra support to make their project smarter, healthier, and more sustainable.

Applications are now open for the Green Shoots Fund, which aims to help with the cost of getting your home or business project officially certified as green.

The fund is available to building owners and developers who want to achieve certifications such as Green Star, Home Star, Passive House, or Net Zero — systems that demonstrate a building performs above standard code requirements.

Council’s Manager of Strategic Planning David Murphy says the fund is part of Council’s long-term commitment to encouraging sustainable development across the city.

“We know that many developers and homeowners want to build smarter and more efficiently, but certification costs can sometimes be a barrier. The Green Shoots Fund is a practical way to help people take that next step towards creating buildings that are better for both people and the environment.”

Green buildings use less energy, are warmer and drier, cost less to run and help reduce waste and emissions.

“This is about supporting local innovation,” Mr Murphy says. “Whether you’re constructing a new commercial development or your dream home, building green helps create a healthier, more sustainable Palmerston North for everyone.”

The Green Shoots Fund is open to building owners and developers with projects within Palmerston North city boundaries. To qualify, applicants must show measurable green outcomes, and certification must be achieved within 24 months of practical completion.

Funding is available each financial year until June 2029 (subject to Council’s Annual Budget processes) and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Mr Murphy encourages early conversations with anyone considering applying.

“We’re here to help,” he says. “Our team can talk through your project and how the fund can support your sustainability goals.”
