Project information memorandum

Planning a building project? A project information memorandum (PIM) can help you get off to a smooth start.

A PIM is a report from the Council that tells you about anything that might affect your building work. For example, land features, rules, or services on your site.

Why get a PIM?

Getting a PIM early helps you:

  • understand what’s possible on your property
  • spot any risks or restrictions before you start
  • avoid delays or extra costs later
  • prepare a stronger building consent application.

You don’t have to get a PIM – it’s optional. But we strongly recommend it.

What’s in a PIM?

Your PIM will include information about:

  • zoning and District Plan rules
  • heritage buildings, protected trees or sites
  • natural hazards (like flooding or erosion)
  • water, stormwater and wastewater connections
  • any other approvals you might need.

How to apply

You can apply for a PIM online. We’ll get back to you within 20 working days.

It's a good idea to apply for a PIM before you submit your building consent. That way, you’ll have the full picture before you go too far with your plans.
