Celaeno Park is a large, open neighbourhood park with sportsfields, a Viking ship playground, basketball court and access to the Frederick Krull Walkway.
The park sits within an area once known as the Stoney Creek Scandinavian Block. From 1871, Scandinavian and German immigrants settled on small farms between Roberts Line, Stoney Creek Road, Napier Road and Kelvin Grove Road.
The area gradually changed as Palmy grew. In 1995, Council set aside land for roads and an eight-hectare park before the surrounding land was developed for housing.
The name Celaeno Park was chosen in 1998. It comes from the Celaeno, the first immigrant ship to bring Scandinavian settlers to New Zealand. Built in Aberdeen in 1863, the ship made 11 voyages to New Zealand.
