Soham, Commercial Funding Advisor
By day, Soham helps bring projects and events to life – connecting teams with external funding and reducing the cost to ratepayers. He's helped secure funding for things like drinking water quality improvements and standards upgrades, and major community events like Diwali.
He also provides commercial guidance, and builds relationships with funders, Council staff, and community partners. "What I enjoy most is seeing how things work behind the scenes," he says. "It's rewarding to support projects that help communities succeed."
Originally from India, Soham moved to Aotearoa New Zealand in 2016 and now calls Palmerston North home. "The pace of life here really suits me. People genuinely prioritise health and connection – it's something I really value."
He encourages others who are new to the city to get involved and embrace everything Palmerston North has to offer. "There's such a welcoming community here, plenty of opportunities to make friends, and a great balance between work, wellbeing, and the outdoors. Don't be afraid to share your culture either – it's what makes Palmy so vibrant and inclusive."
Outside of work, Soham is a trained yoga instructor, following in his father's footsteps. He teaches classes at Massey University and the Hindu Temple and Community Centre, and this year he brought something special to Palmy's Diwali Mela – Glow and Flow Yoga, a light-filled session inspired by the Festival of Lights.
“For me, Diwali is about the light within. It’s a time to celebrate new beginnings, let go of what no longer serves us, and reconnect with what truly matters. It’s wonderful to see the Diwali spirit alive in Palmy and the city buzzing with festive energy."
