A new accessible toilet is on its way to the Albert Street river entrance, adding to the improvements already made at this popular riverside spot.

Following the new seating and resting area, which was installed in late 2023, this next stage will make the space even more comfortable and accessible for everyone who visits.

Earlier this year, elected members considered a few different location options for the new public toilet and agreed on the site opposite the resting area past the cul-de-sac.

The first stage of work involves installing new water and wastewater pipes, electricity and connections to service the future toilet.

Property Manager, Glenn Bunny, says this is a small but important project that will make a real difference for people enjoying our riverside spaces.

“At the moment, the nearest toilet is about 1.5 kilometres away in either direction. Once complete, this new facility will make things much easier for the many cyclists, dog walkers, runners, and families who use this as a key entrance and exit to the river walkway.”

The new toilet will feature a single accessible cubicle with its door facing the river, along with a drinking fountain and an accessible carpark.

“We’ve designed the toilet so that the door faces the river. This helps address privacy concerns raised by nearby residents while keeping the focus on the river environment. The toilet and landscaping have also been designed to blend in with the river environment and complement the surrounding area.”

Work to install the new pipes is planned to start on Wednesday, 29 October (weather permitting) and will take about four weeks to complete.

During this time, some machinery and safety fencing will be in place, but pedestrian and cyclist access will remain open along existing footpaths.

The cul-de-sac near the river entrance will sometimes be closed to traffic, and a few nearby carparks will be unavailable during this period. Electronic message boards are being installed to keep river users informed while the work is underway.

The toilet block will be built off-site over the coming months and is expected to be installed around March 2026. Once in place, it will provide a much-needed stop for people enjoying the river paths.

Mr Bunny says it's great to see the first step of this project underway.

“Our community have been asking for this for many years, and by early next year, they’ll have an accessible, thoughtfully designed facility that makes visiting the river a little easier for everyone. ”
