Palmerston North performing arts groups have a chance to grow local talent, with applications now open for the Arts Heart educational development fund.

Managed by the Council on behalf of the Palmerston North Performing Arts Trust, this fund, which was gifted by the sisters Eva and Elsie Laing, supports projects that help young performers develop their skills and confidence, whether it’s through workshops, classes, or mentoring.

Chair of the Trust, Margaret May, is encouraging local groups to apply.

"We’re proud to support the next generation of performers here in Palmy. This fund is all about giving young people a chance to grow their talent, connect with others, and dream big. If your group is creating opportunities for young people in the performing arts, we’d love to hear from you.”

Grants of up to $5,000 per project are available, and applications are open to a wide range of performing arts, from music and dance to drama and everything in between.

Applications close at 5pm on Friday, 22 August.

What last year's recipients have achieved

Anomaly Dance Trust:

With support from the fund, Anomaly ran three hip hop dance workshops in January, catering to beginner, intermediate, and advanced dancers aged 9–21. The sessions focused on building confidence, developing skills, and creating a space where rangatahi could connect with others who share their passion for dance.

Pasifika Performer Development Series:

This three-day programme brought together 79 young people from Palmerston North and Horowhenua. Led by established Pasifika artists, participants explored acting, movement, storytelling, and cultural expression — all with a strong focus on identity and representation.

Manawatū Summer Shakespeare Mentorship:

Led by local director Rachel Lenart, this programme gave emerging artists hands-on experience working on a full-scale Shakespeare production, supported by experienced mentors. It’s helping to keep creative talent in the region by offering real, challenging opportunities to grow.

Palmerston North Dance Association:

89 young dancers took part in ballet and jazz workshops led by experienced tutors, culminating in a showcase performance that celebrated their progress and passion.
