We’re resealing more than 50 streets in Palmerston North during summer

Grader levelling the road surface so it can be resealed.

More than 50 urban and rural streets in Palmerston North are scheduled for resurfacing as part of our road maintenance programme — over 20 more than were completed last year.

Alongside our road maintenance contractor, Fulton Hogan, we’re committed to ensuring our streets remain safe and well-maintained for everyone in our city. The total cost of this work is about $3.9 million.

As part of the resealing process, streets will first undergo pre-seal repairs. These are aimed to prepare roads for resealing and include tasks such as lifting manholes and repairing any pavement faults. These treatments have already started on some streets as they need to cure before we return to resurface the street.

Resealing involves applying a new layer of surfacing to further waterproof the existing road surface. This process extends the lifespan of the road and contributes to a safer and smoother driving experience for our community.

Chief Infrastructure Officer Glen O’Connor says it’s important to note this list represents our priority streets for resealing. All listed streets will receive pre-seal repairs; however, resealing will depend on the final cost for this work. As a result, some streets may have their resealing deferred to next summer, and in some cases, only specific sections rather than the entire street will be resealed.

Mr O’Connor says residents on these streets will get a letter in the mailbox from our contractor Fulton Hogan to notify them a few days before their street is scheduled to undergo work. Roadworks like these require dry weather, so we ask residents to be patient if some jobs need to be delayed.

“Resealing a road is expensive, so we prioritise this type of work based on network requirements. Each road has an estimated lifespan, and we repair potholes and other surface defects to help the road last until it's scheduled for a full reseal or rebuild.”

“Palmerston North is a great place to live, but we do get some wet winters, and the city is built on a combination of soft river soil and moisture-sensitive clay. These are not ideal foundations for roads as they don’t drain water very well. Once water gets into a road, it becomes much easier for tyres to pluck out loose seal, which allows more rainwater to get under the surface.”

Mr O’Connor says the summer months are our busiest time of year for road maintenance and resealing across the city.

“We encourage everyone to keep this in mind and allow extra time for travel while our crews are out on the roads. Our contractors work hard to complete projects and reopen roads as quickly as possible – so please be patient, plan ahead, and give them a friendly wave when you pass by.”

We thank the community for their patience and cooperation during this essential maintenance work.
