Town planning & building certificates for alcohol licence applications

These documents show that your premises are safe. You must provide copies with your alcohol licence application – if you don't, your application can be delayed or rejected.

Your application for an alcohol licence must include both a town planning certificate and a building certificate. You can apply for your town planning and building certificates at the same time.

Town planning certificate

A town planning certificate proves your premises meets the requirements of the Resource Management Act – it shows that you either have resource consent, or you don't need it.

Building certificate

A building certificate shows that your premises meets the requirements of the New Zealand Building Code.

If you are:

  • carrying out building work, it shows that you have building consent, and the work is expected to meet the building code when it's finished
  • not carrying out any building work, it shows that the existing layout of the premises meets the building code.
