Go behind the scenes of Palmerston North’s recycling system

Council's education officers lead a group of children and adults around our resource recovery centre.

Ever wondered what really happens to your recycling after it leaves the kerb? Here’s your chance to find out.

The Awapuni Resource Recovery Centre is opening its doors for two days during the school holidays, giving locals a behind-the-scenes look at how recycling is sorted and processed in Palmerston North.

Waste Minimisation Officer Ariadne Smith, who is hosting the tours, says the scale of the operation often surprises people.

“Last year alone, we emptied over 600,000 recycling bins and 200,000 glass crates, which led to more than 4,500 tonnes diverted from landfill. This is your chance to see where it all goes and how it's sorted.”

Six free tours are available: Friday 10 April and Wednesday 15 April at 9am, 11am and 1pm. Each tour is limited to 20 people, so early registration is recommended. First in, first served.

With growing scepticism about recycling, these tours aim to set the record straight.

“Recycling does make a difference, and it doesn’t end up in landfill. We want people to see that for themselves,” says Mrs Smith.

Visitors will see trucks unload, watch staff and machinery sort materials, and get an honest look at what really comes through the system, including items that shouldn’t be there.

Once sorted, materials are sent across New Zealand to be turned into new products, from glass in Auckland to plastics and paper repurposed into everyday packaging.

Weather permitting, tours will also include the composting area, which composted 6,164 tonnes of green waste last year.
