Main Street bus terminal to temporarily relocate due to roadworks
Published on 12 March 2026
Part of the Main Street bus terminal will be temporarily relocated when the second stage of roadworks on Main Street starts in March.
Platform two will be relocated from Monday 16 March, due to a partial closure of Main Street, from the roundabout on The Square to the end of the bus terminal, which will affect how buses can enter and exit the area.
Stage 2 is expected to take about six weeks and will include two parts:
- Wastewater upgrade beneath the Main St/Square roundabout
An ageing wastewater pipe beneath the roundabout will be replaced. The existing pipe is more than 100 years old and made of glazed earthenware. It’s unlikely to withstand upcoming construction activities and isn't big enough to cope with the increasing flows expected soon. Replacing the pipe now reduces the risk of failure.
- Road surface rehabilitation on the northern side of Main Street
Road pavement rehabilitation will take place on the northern side of Main Street only – from the Main Street/The Square roundabout through to the bus terminal, along the front of the new Safari Group building.
This stage of work will require us to close the northbound lane on Main Street outside the Safari Group building from the roundabout to the end of the bus terminal. The traffic lane on the Courthouse side will remain unaffected, which means bus platforms 1 and 3 can remain in their existing locations.
Despite work taking place on the Main Street/The Square roundabout, traffic will remain open to two lanes on The Square and through the roundabout. To achieve this, Fulton Hogan will temporarily asphalt over the grassed centre section of the roundabout and use this space as a vehicle lane. This allows us to maintain traffic while construction is underway. We’ll monitor it closely in the opening days of construction and will adjust the set up if required to ensure traffic flows consistently through the area.
Staff are working closely with Horizons Regional Council to manage the temporary move of Platform 2.
- Platforms 1 and 3 will stay in their existing locations at the bus terminal.
- Platform 2 will be temporarily relocated about 50 metres on Main Street outside Bennett Currie and Jacobs Florentine at the end of the courthouse. The temporary platform will be clearly signposted to help passengers.
Acting infrastructure general manager Glen O’Connor thanks businesses, bus users and everyone else for their cooperation and understanding during the recent Stage 1 work that repaired the bus lanes at the Main Street bus terminal. The terminal reopened ahead of schedule in early February.
“We recognise that major events such as the upcoming Rural Games are an important and busy time for businesses around The Square, so we’ve deliberately scheduled the next stage of work to begin after the event to minimise disruption during this peak period,” Mr O’Connor says.
Stage 3 will take place later in the year and includes upgrades to the footpath and kerb (roadside drain) on the northern corner of Main Street and The Square. There’s likely to be other minor wrap up work once construction of the Safari Group hotel is complete.
Mr O’Connor says Fulton Hogan and Council are both committed to completing the work as quickly as possible while minimising disruption to businesses, residents and road users. All businesses in the area remain open.
