Quietly influential for more than four decades, whether behind-the-scenes or front-of-house, Paul O’Brien earned himself the informal title ‘Champion of the Central Riviera’.

A great advocate for the city, Paul has represented a diverse selection of Palmerston North’s community organisations as member, trustee, committee member, board chair, president and director.

His extensive service across multiple community-centred groups has resulted in Life Memberships for the Manawatū Business Chamber, Marist Sports Club, Institute of Financial Advisors, Manawatū Club, and Palmerston North Squash Rackets Club (SquashGym).

Paul O’Brien Organised, effective and loyal, Paul supported the restoration of the Regent Theatre and development of Arena Manawatū. He served as an official regional ambassador and advocated for affordable, inclusive access to sports participation.

Paul has epitomised outstanding volunteer service. Whether as inaugural chair of the Manawatū Alzheimer’s Society, past chair of Te Manawa Museum, Art Gallery & Science Centre or as a junior rugby coach, his governance skills have proved invaluable, his networking abilities legendary and his overall dedication to community wellbeing undeniably impressive.
