Thinking of standing for Council? Come see what it’s all about!
Published on 04 June 2025
Have you ever thought about running for Council – or even Mayor – but weren’t quite sure what it actually involves? Here’s your chance to find out.
We're hosting an information session on Wednesday 18 June, from 9am to 12pm, on the first floor of the Council building (in the Council Chamber and Linkspan area).
Deputy Electoral Officer, Hannah White, says the drop-in event is a great way to get a real feel for what the roles of councillor or mayor are like.
“This is a relaxed session where anyone can come along, sit in on a live Committee meeting, chat with staff and current elected members, and learn more about what the job involves,” she says. “You’ll also be able to pick up a Candidate Information Handbook and other helpful resources.”
Whether you’re just curious, or seriously thinking about standing in the upcoming local elections, this session is a great starting point. There’s no pressure – just good, practical information to help you make an informed decision.
Candidate nominations open at the beginning of July, so now is the perfect time to be considering if local government could be your next step.
Mrs White says the upcoming election is an opportunity for all perspectives and backgrounds in our community to be represented at the Council decision-making table.
“Here’s your chance to use your voice and make a difference for our city. We’re looking to elect 15 councillors and one mayor to lead the city through the next three-year term.”
And while the roles are rewarding, she says it’s important to understand the time commitment involved.
“Being a councillor usually involves around 20 hours of work a week, while the mayor's position is full-time. It’s a big commitment – but one that can make a real impact.”
“I encourage anyone who’s even thinking about standing to come along – we’ll bring you up to speed and answer any questions you’ve got.”
