Roadworks and road closures

This page shows roadworks by Council and any of our contractors that may result in significant detours and delays.

It doesn't identify roadworks being done by other agencies, such as power and telecommunications companies.

Most of our roading projects take place over summer, but we carry out some routine maintenance to our water network over winter.

Campbell Road closure

Roadworks will be taking place in Bunnythorpe in early May to reseal the roundabout in the village and replace guardrails on the corner of Campbell and Waughs Road.

Work is expected to start on 2 May, but may be pushed out due to the weather forecast. Some roads will be fully closed 24/7 for about one week, including overnight.

Roads affected by closures:

  • Campbell Road, from the roundabout to Waughs Road
  • Dixons Line

Detour routes will be in place via:

  • Kairanga Bunnythorpe Road
  • Newbury Line
  • Te Ngaio Road
  • Railway Road
  • Clevely Line
  • Stoney Creek Road

Temporary lower speed limits will apply on detour routes.

Dixons Line wastewater upgrade

We’re upgrading the size of the wastewater main on Dixons Line, so it can cope with the increasing flows for the next 100 years.

Work is scheduled to begin in late March, and will continue to the end of June, weather permitting.

Work will be completed in small stages between 8am and 5pm, although working hours may vary depending on the section of pipe being worked on each day. We’ll start at the roundabout with Campbell Road and gradually move towards Raymond Street.

Dixons Line will be closed to through traffic during the day, with detours in place, to keep our crew safe due to the location of the pipe.

Ihaka Street stormwater pipes upgrade

We’re upgrading the stormwater pipes on Ihaka Street until May. We’ll start at the intersection near Te Awe Awe Street and gradually move towards Albert Street.

Due to the location of the pipe, Ihaka Street will be closed to through traffic during the day to keep our crew safe.

During the road closure, residents are asked to enter Ihaka Street via Albert Street only, and exit Ihaka Street via Te Awe Awe Street.

Kelvin Grove Road rebuild

Design work is continuing for the section of Kelvin Grove Road, from Stoney Creek Road to Henaghans Road. Construction will be staged and is likely to start next summer.

The planned upgrades include:

  • widening the two-lane road to provide shoulders on both sides
  • filling some dips to create a flatter and safer road surface
  • stormwater and drainage improvements

Main Street upgrade

The second stage of upgrading Main Street includes two parts and is expected to take until mid-May, with the condition of underground pipes and manholes requiring more extensive work.

What’s happening

  • Wastewater upgrade (Main St/The Square roundabout)
We’re replacing a wastewater pipe under the roundabout. It’s around 120 years old, made from earthenware, and no longer strong or large enough for future use. Replacing it now helps prevent failures later.
  • Road repairs (north side of Main Street)
We’re rebuilding the road surface on the northern side of Main Street, from the roundabout to the bus terminal (outside the Safari Group building).

Traffic and bus changes

  • The northbound lane outside the Safari Group building (from the roundabout to the end of the bus terminal) will be closed.
  • The lane on the Courthouse side stays open, so bus platforms 1 and 3 remain in place.
  • Platform 2 is temporarily moved about 50 metres along the road, outside Jacobs Florentine.

Roundabout and night works

  • Two lanes will stay open through The Square and the roundabout.
  • After the pipe work is finished, we’ll begin concrete work. This will require closing one lane of The Square (from Broadway toward the roundabout) from around 30 April, for 3 to 4 evenings (10pm to 6am).

What’s next

Stage 3 will happen later this year and will include new footpaths and kerbs on the northern corner of Main Street and The Square, along with some final finishing work after the Safari Group hotel is completed.

Stoney Creek Road upgrade

Stoney Creek Road is being upgraded in two stages. Stage one is underway between Kelvin Grove Road and 186 Stoney Creek Road, with work expected to be finished by June.

From mid-February, construction will require a full road closure. The detour route is via Hendersons Line. This detour will add around five minutes to most journeys, so it might be a good idea to allow extra travel time.

Stage two will run next summer and extend the upgrade down Stoney Creek Road towards Whakarongo School.

The planned upgrades include:

  • widening the two-lane road to provide shoulders on both sides
  • filling some dips to create a flatter and safer road surface
  • stormwater and drainage improvements

Te Wanaka Road water upgrade

We’re installing a new water main on Te Wanaka Road, which is stage two of a five stage water construction programme to enable new development in the Kikiwhenua residential development area and will also support future development in the wider Kakatangiata growth area.

Completion is planned for June 2026. During construction, Te Wanaka Road will be closed to through traffic during working hours (7am to 5pm).

Key construction phases:

  • Stage one – already completed
Involved installing a new water main half-way up Te Wanaka Rd.
  • Stage two (from next week): Extension of the water main
Extending the new water main in Te Wanaka Road up to the intersection with SH56.
  • Stage three (early 2026): New water rider main
A new DN75 water rider main will be installed early next year to support future stages of the Kikiwhenua development. A rider main is a smaller pipe that the properties will connect directly to.
  • Stage four (2026): New wastewater main installation
A new wastewater pressure main will be installed next year, enabling development of future stages of Kikiwhenua and Kakatangiata.
  • Stage five (mid 2026): Intersection pipework
New pipework will be installed simultaneously at the intersection with SH56, as an extension of the new mains noted in the above stages.
  • Road rebuild (2026–2027)
The road will be fully reconstructed once the underground services have been completed.

Updates will be provided as each stage progresses.

Tremaine Ave/Rangitikei Street intersection

We’re carrying out work at the Tremaine Avenue and Rangitikei Street intersection to replace a damaged traffic signal and pole on the corner nearest to Mobil.

The work is expected to take around one week and will be completed by Fulton Hogan using a mix of day and night shifts to get the job done as quickly as possible. Day works will take place between 9am and 3pm, and night works between 7pm and 7am.

At times, lane closures will be in place, however lanes will be reopened during peak traffic periods to minimise disruption when possible. Some closures will need to remain in place while concrete sets. We’re doing this upgrade due to damage caused by a number of vehicle crashes at this location.

Vogel Street upgrade

We’re rebuilding the section between Milton and Featherston Streets until late May.

The work will involve removing the top layer of the road and rebuilding it from the base up, which is a more extensive upgrade than a standard reseal.

Construction will take place on weekdays from 7am to 5pm and is expected to run until late May.

Work is being carried out in three stages, with the first section from Milton to Rata, then Rata to Haydon, and finally Haydon to Featherston. Each section will require a 24/7 road closure for through traffic while work is underway, with detours clearly signposted.

A temporary roundabout is installed at Armstrong and Tremaine to help keep traffic moving along the main detour route.

Access to shops and the Roslyn Library will remain open throughout the project. Visitors are encouraged to enter the area via Tremaine Avenue or Kipling Street.

Wyndham Street upgrade

The work involves improvements to the road, footpaths, and stormwater management along a 450m section of Wyndham Street between Oxford Street and Cambridge Avenue.

The upgrade includes:

  • Rebuilding, chipsealing, and widening the road to allow for a shoulder
  • Repairing the Oxford Street intersection
  • Installing new kerb and channel for stormwater
  • Constructing new footpaths and vehicle crossings
  • Adjusting berms where footpaths currently exist (these may be slightly smaller), and adding new berms on the southern side to border the new kerb, channel, and footpath

Work will start with the footpaths, followed by roadworks towards the end of the project. Construction will begin at the Oxford Street end, on the northern side of the road (even-numbered properties, where there’s currently no footpath).

Early next year, crews will move to the other side. This approach helps reduce dust and, more importantly, keeps one side of the road open. During this time, Wyndham Street will operate as a one-way road for residents.

We expect to complete the work in June 2026.
