Projects already completed

The following construction projects have been completed as part of the wider PNITI strategy.

Ferguson-Pitt intersection

In 2023, we reconstructed the road at the corner of Ferguson and Pitt Streets.

This marked a significant milestone in completing the final link to our city’s inner ring road (comprising of Pitt, Walding, Grey, Princess, and Ferguson Streets), which is part of our strategic vision to encourage safer and more efficient traffic flow through the inner city.

The Ferguson – Pitt transformation included:

  • Traffic-light controlled intersection at the Ferguson and Pitt intersection.
  • Widening the road to four lanes.
  • Signalised pedestrian crossing near the Pak'n Save fuel station.
  • Wider footpaths.
  • Intersection changes to the Linton-Ferguson intersection to prevent right turns across four lanes of traffic.

Featherston Street cycleway

We constructed the first section of the cycleway and pedestrian upgrades on Featherston Street in 2024 between Aroha and North Streets. This project is part of the wider urban cycle masterplan as Featherston Street is a key cycle corridor for the city’s cycle network. Key improvements included:

  • two new raised pedestrian crossings outside Central Normal and Palmerston North Boys’ High Schools
  • a separated uni-directional cycleway on both sides of the road
  • changes to the lane layout and light phasing at the Rangitikei intersection
  • intersection improvements at Ngata, Carroll, Taonui and Aroha Streets.

Bus shelter and public transport upgrades

In 2024, we upgraded the city’s bus stop infrastructure to support the rollout of a new bus network implemented by Horizons Regional Council.

The project saw 400 bus stops and 82 new shelters implemented across the city as part of the PNITI Enabling Streets for People package. We’ll continue to maintain and upgrade our shelters as an ongoing operational process.
