Enabling streets for people

Enabling streets for people in Palmerston North is about creating safe roads that cater to all road users and improving connections between neighbourhoods.

This approach aims to reduce traffic congestion, improve air quality, and create more enjoyable city streets where people can easily interact with their surroundings by either foot, bike or bus.

Here’s a list of key projects under the enabling streets for people programme:

Safer speed limits

Around schools:

Aiming to improve safety for children getting to and from school, speed limits on the streets surrounding each school will be reduced to slow vehicles at school times, creating safer environments near the school gate. This will align with national direction around the setting of speed limits.

City centre transformation and business case

Developing a business case to redesign the city centre with people-focused streets that promote walking, reduces congestion, and creates better public spaces for community activities and businesses. This includes our council Streets for People programme and redeveloping the city bus hub.
