Transport modelling

Modelling is a valuable tool to understand the impact that projects can have on the existing network. Different models can tell us different things and works at different scales. We have two different models available to use.

Palmerston North strategic transport model

This model is a macroscopic three-stage traffic model with an added public transport and cycling component.

The model covers within our city boundary and the adjacent areas of the surrounding districts. The tool can be used to understand city-wide and regional transport planning studies.

The models can be used for understanding the impacts on the transport network by predicting how changes will impact how people move around the study area. This can include things like land-use changes, permanent road closures, installing traffic signals or roundabouts.

The model was developed with CUBE software and is available to be used. Please contact our asset management team if you would like access to the model by emailing asset.information@pncc.govt.nz.

Please note that an administration fee may apply for private developments.

City Centre Aimsun Model

This model is a mesoscopic simulation model centred around the city centre.

The model was developed as a part of the City Centre Indicative Business Case. The model simulates real-world multimodal travel conditions to provide a localised understanding of changes on the ground. The Aimsun model allows for the testing of roading interventions.
