Community invited to share ideas for old jockey clubrooms
Published on 05 June 2026
What could the old jockey clubrooms at Ashhurst Domain become next?
If you’ve ever walked past the building and wondered what could be done with it, now’s your chance to help shape its future. We’re inviting the community to share ideas and expressions of interest to bring the much-loved building back to life, within the Domain.
Empty since 2017, the former jockey clubrooms have been part of Ashhurst’s story for generations. Built in the 1920s as changing rooms for the Ashhurst-Pohangina Racing Club, the building has also served locals and tourists as a tuck shop and café over the years.
Now we want to hear from people interested in restoring or redeveloping the building for a new purpose.
Parks and Reserves Manager Kathy Dever-Tod says relocating the old clubrooms could help preserve their history while creating new opportunities for community use.
“The old clubrooms have a lot of history and memories attached to them for many people in Ashhurst. We would love to see the old building relocated into a more prominent position within the Domain, where it can be of more benefit to the community."
Mrs Dever-Tod says we're still in the early stages of exploring what could happen next, and we are open to a range of possibilities.
“At this point, we simply want to understand whether there’s genuine community interest in the building and what kinds of ideas people might have."
We're especially keen to hear from community groups, sporting organisations, local businesses, individuals, and anyone with a realistic vision for the building’s future.
There are still important decisions to be made, including whether we would contribute toward costs such as repairs, upgrades, and any relocation.
Expressions of interest close at 4pm on 6 July 2026.
