Main Street bus terminal to temporarily relocate from 5 January
Published on 12 December 2025
Palmerston North bus users will see a temporary change early next year, with all services relocating from the Main Street Bus Terminal to Te Marae o Hine – The Square from Monday 5 January.
The temporary relocation will remain in place for about four weeks as the Palmerston North City Council repairs the road for entering and exiting the Bus Terminal, including under the terminal canopy or roof.
Three temporary platform areas will be set up near the existing bus shelters in The Square. InterCity bus services will be relocated to the front of the isite.
Main Street will remain open to vehicles in both directions. Parking and footpaths on Main Street will not be affected, though there will be no parking available in Te Marae o HIne - The Square during construction to make room for the temporary bus platforms. All nearby businesses will continue to operate.
Acting Transport and Development Manager Tyler da Silva says the repairs will strengthen the road under the bus terminal.
“To complete the work safely, we need to close the terminal and move bus services into The Square. We know this is a significant change for passengers, so we’ll have clear signage at the temporary platforms in place.”
Horizons Regional Council senior transport planner Isaac Mills says passengers can find the latest detour information via Horizons’ website or by downloading the free Transit app.

“The Transit app also includes live-tracking technology, so people can see exactly when the next bus will be showing up. We know the temporary move away from the Main Street Bus Hub will be an inconvenience, but we support giving Palmerston North City Council and Fulton Hogan the space they need to deliver this important infrastructure work.”
Fulton Hogan will work extended hours to complete the repairs on Main Street as quickly as possible. There may be periods when the crew isn’t on site, and this is to allow the new concrete to cure properly.
There will be more work required in the area next year, including the upgrade of a 100-year-old wastewater pipe running from the roundabout on Main Street to Broadway Avenue. More details will be shared closer to construction. The footpath and kerb, or roadside drain, around Main/Broadway near the Old Post Office Development, will also be replaced in September 2026 when its construction has finished.
