To help address climate change we’re creating a citywide action plan – and we want your ideas.
This plan is being co-developed with our community so that we can all have a say on how we lower emissions and ensure Palmy is resilient to the worst effects of climate change.
This plan isn’t just about what the Council can do, but what everyone could do in the city – Council, businesses, schools, clubs and other organisations, and you at your home.
There are a number of issues that Palmy may face over the coming decades as the climate warms. The main problems that our city is likely to experience include more intense rainstorms that could cause flooding, and a gradual heating up of the local environment meaning there would be more days with temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius. This would likely lead to more frequent droughts, which would impact our natural environment and possibly our drinking water supply.

We’ve been making some progress, but more is needed
Here at Council we’ve been making some changes in how we do things over the last decade. As a result, we have seen a steady decrease in our organisational emissions.
We have invested in things like LED streetlights, solar panels, electric tools, electric vehicles and upgrading to more efficient pumps, heating and hot water systems to save energy. We’ve also been working across Council to make sure we factor sustainability into all our day to day activities and the larger decisions we make.
But while Council’s emissions have been tracking downwards, emissions across the city have not.
Now we need to work with you on a plan to make real progress on our citywide emissions and to make sure Palmy is ready to cope with the challenges from climate change in the future.
This is a challenge we all need to step up to
Climate change is something that will impact us all, so reducing our pollution and adapting to the impacts it creates is something we need to do together.
We’re keen to hear from you, individuals and organisations around Palmy, with ideas how we can lower our emissions and build a more resilient city.
Your feedback will be analysed by council staff to summarise and assess the possible effectiveness and environmental impact of all the ideas and suggestions, to help determine whether it could be included in a future climate plan.
