Tell us how you would take action on climate change

We’re working with the community to create a citywide action plan on climate change and want to hear your best ideas!
Palmerston North is likely to face more extreme weather in the coming years including more intense rainstorms that could cause flooding, hotter days and more frequent droughts, which would impact our environment and possibly our drinking water supply.
To make sure we’re prepared, we want to work with you to co-develop a climate action plan for the city that includes both reducing emissions and adapting to a changing environment.
“We know climate change is likely to affect our city, and it’s something we can’t ignore,” says Palmerston North City Council Climate Change & Sustainability Manager Adam Jarvis. “But the good news is, we can all be part of the solution.
"We’re keen to hear ideas from residents, businesses, schools, community groups and anyone who calls Palmy home. Whether it’s something big or small, if it can help cut emissions or make the city more climate-resilient, we want to hear about it.”
Over the past decade, Council has made some big changes in how it operates:
- installing LED streetlights
- using solar panels and electric vehicles
- making buildings more energy efficient.
While that’s helped reduce the Council’s own emissions, citywide emissions haven’t followed the same trend.
Now we need to work with you on a plan to make real progress on our emissions across the whole city, and to make sure Palmy is ready to cope with the challenges from climate change in the future.
Mr Jarvis says everyone has a part to play. “This is a challenge we all need to step up to. Climate change is something that will impact us all, so reducing our pollution and adapting to the impacts it creates is something we need to do together – from using energy smarter at home, to how we move around the city, grow food, and care for our natural spaces.
“We’ve made some good progress at Council, but we can’t do this alone. We need to make it easier for everyone in Palmy to take climate action, and your ideas will help us do that.”
For more information and to share your ideas and suggestions go to pncc.govt.nz/ClimatePlan and make sure you give us your feedback by 31 July.
Your feedback will be reviewed by Council staff to assess whether it could be included in a future climate plan.
