Roadworks and road closures

This page shows roadworks by Council and any of our contractors that may result in significant detours and delays.

It doesn't identify roadworks being done by other agencies, such as power and telecommunications companies.

Most of our roading projects take place over summer, but we carry out some routine maintenance to our water network over winter.

Dixons Line wastewater upgrade

We’re upgrading the size of the wastewater main on Dixons Line, so it can cope with the increasing flows for the next 100 years.

Work is scheduled to begin in late March, and will continue to the end of June, weather permitting.

Work will be completed in small stages between 8am and 5pm, although working hours may vary depending on the section of pipe being worked on each day. We’ll start at the roundabout with Campbell Road and gradually move towards Raymond Street.

Dixons Line will be closed to through traffic during the day, with detours in place, to keep our crew safe due to the location of the pipe.

Jickell, Hardie and Collingwood Streets upgrades

We’re doing a series of water and wastewater upgrades on Jickell, Hardie and Collingwood Streets.

This involves upgrading the size of these older pipes. Work is expected to continue until late-August, weather dependent. Additional work is also planned next financial year, although the exact timing for this has not yet been confirmed.

Water main upgrade on Jickell Street

The first stage of work involves upgrading the water main along the full length of Jickell Street, between Te Awe Awe Street and Centennial Drive.

To complete this 850-metre section as quickly as possible, we have two construction crews working at the same time. They will start in the middle of Jickell Street and work in opposite directions toward Te Awe Awe Street and Centennial Drive.

Working hours will generally be between 7am and 5pm, Monday to Friday, but will vary each day based on the section of work at that specific time.

During working hours, Jickell Street will operate under one-lane, with speed restrictions in place. Please take extra care when travelling through the area and follow any signage.

Wastewater upgrades on Hardie and Collingwood Streets

At the same time, we’ll also be starting upgrades on the wastewater network on:

  • Hardie Street, from Jickell Street to Collingwood Street
  • Collingwood Street, from Collingwood Court to Hardie Street

The first stage over the coming weeks includes upgrading the wastewater lateral connections that run from the main pipe to each property boundary. Roads will remain open, but reduced speed limits will be in place. There will be shoulder closures in the areas where crews are working on property connections.

We’ll return at a later date, still to be confirmed, to upgrade the wastewater main that sits in the middle of the road.

Kelvin Grove Road rebuild

Design work is continuing for the section of Kelvin Grove Road, from Stoney Creek Road to Henaghans Road. Construction will be staged and is likely to start next summer.

The planned upgrades include:

  • widening the two-lane road to provide shoulders on both sides
  • filling some dips to create a flatter and safer road surface
  • stormwater and drainage improvements

North Range Road closure

We are upgrading North Range Road between the Pahiatua Track intersection and Hall Block Road. The work is expected to be completed by October 2026.

During construction, North Range Road will be closed to through traffic.

This upgrade includes:

  • widening some parts of North Range Road to improve lines of sight
  • replacing all road existing culverts
  • pavement rebuild

There are multiple heavy vehicles, open trenches and excavations within the closure.

Pitt Street closure

Pitt Street will be closed between Main Street and Cuba Street from 9am to 3pm daily, Tuesday 30 June and Wednesday 1 July (weather dependent) for road resurfacing works.

The closure is required to safely complete milling and paving activities. Access for residents, businesses and parking facilities within the work area will be maintained under traffic management control.

Detours will be in place via surrounding streets.

Stoney Creek Road upgrade

Stoney Creek Road is currently being upgraded from Kelvin Grove Road to Whakarongo School, with work expected to be finished in late-2026.

Construction involves a full road closure. The detour route is via Hendersons Line. This detour will add around five minutes to most journeys, so it might be a good idea to allow extra travel time.

The upgrades include:

  • widening the two-lane road to provide shoulders on both sides
  • filling some dips to create a flatter and safer road surface
  • stormwater and drainage improvements

Wyndham Street upgrade

The work involves improvements to the road, footpaths, and stormwater management along a 450m section of Wyndham Street between Oxford Street and Cambridge Avenue.

The upgrade includes:

  • Rebuilding, chipsealing, and widening the road to allow for a shoulder
  • Repairing the Oxford Street intersection
  • Installing new kerb and channel for stormwater
  • Constructing new footpaths and vehicle crossings
  • Adjusting berms where footpaths currently exist (these may be slightly smaller), and adding new berms on the southern side to border the new kerb, channel, and footpath

The footpath will be closed on the northern side of the street from Monday, 18 May to Tuesday 26 May.

Traffic management will be in place, with one-way access. There are periods of full closures over the coming weeks.

We expect to complete the work in August.
