Update on the resumption of construction on Featherston Street

Elected Members will discuss the next steps for in-lane bus stops at a council meeting on Wednesday 22 May.

At a council meeting held last Wednesday, elected members voted to pause construction activities to allow officers to prepare a comprehensive report on alternative options for the design of bus stops on Featherston Street. On Wednesday 22 May, elected members will hear the options, and then decide on the next steps for the bus stops. In the meantime, other safety improvement work will proceed as originally planned.

Chief Infrastructure Officer Chris Dyhrberg says this work on side streets will help improve pedestrian safety, and will also ensure we meet the construction and funding deadline of 30 June set by NZ Transport Agency - Waka Kotahi.

“The approved safety improvements include a raised pedestrian crossing on Aroha Street outside Central Normal School and intersection improvements at Aroha, Taonui, Lombard, Carrol, and Ngata Streets. The design for these intersections incorporates measures such as reducing total crossing distances and providing dedicated crossing platforms for pedestrians, which accommodate the requests made by our senior, disability and school communities during the co-design process. Due to the tight deadline, it’s unlikely our contractor will be able to complete all of these intersections by the end of June, so we will prioritise them based on use and need.”

Construction of the intersections is expected to resume later this week mostly during the daytime. Traffic management will be in place.
