New bridge is being constructed on Amberley Avenue

A small road bridge crosses a culvert.

Construction of a new bridge on Amberley Avenue, between Pencarrow Street and Caroline Crescent, is ongoing until early-2025.

During this time, detour routes will redirect vehicles down Pencarrow Street and Clarke Avenue.

Pedestrian access across the bridge will be closed 24/7 during the construction period, as the contractor is unable to provide a safe passage through the worksite and there is no alternative route available.

Map of Amberley Avenue bridge construction and traffic management

Elected members decided in December 2023 to replace a failing culvert on Amberley Avenue with a new 12-metre single span bridge.

The previous culvert was scheduled for repairs in 2024 following a routine assessment in June 2023, which would have extended its lifespan for a brief period before requiring a full replacement. That assessment found the condition of the culvert had deteriorated more than expected, requiring us to instead bring forward the full replacement.

Urgent restrictions have been in place on the road above the culvert since the assessment to prevent further damage, including weight restrictions and traffic management to limit the road to a single lane.

Emmetts Civil Construction is building the new replacement bridge.
